Disbelief as Government Supporters Take Over Hungary's Top Newspaper

Media professionals at Hungary's most popular newspaper have shown disbelief after a media group considered aligned with nationalist prime minister Viktor Orbán's party, Fidesz, purchased the tabloid from its previous Swiss owners.

Context of Purchase

The purchase, which occurs while Hungary approaches pivotal elections next year, is widely seen as another attempt to strengthen state control on the news outlets.

A government-aligned media group, Indamedia, announced on Friday it had purchased a group of Hungarian titles, including the fashion publication and Blikk, a widely-read daily newspaper whose digital edition reaches about three million digital visitors monthly.

Management Shake-up

Blikk's former editor-in-chief, Ivan Zolt Nagy, stated on Monday that he and another key leader were leaving in "common understanding" with the acquiring company.

They were appointed seven months ago to reposition Blikk, "focusing not on sensationalism but on compelling journalism" and to be "more reader-centered, reporting on politics, economics, and cultural topics," he stated on Facebook.

Staff Reactions

Workers from Blikk admitted feeling taken aback. "I nearly experienced a heart attack when I was informed of the announcement," said one journalist, who wished to be anonymous. "Personally, this is professionally concerning."

Blikk has announced a fresh chief editor, Baláz Kolossváry.

Press Environment Issues

Numerous reporters who have decided to stay admit being in a difficult position as there are not many other outlets left to which they could seek employment.

During the last 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a sprawling government-supporting media landscape to strengthen his public perception and polls.

Political Timing

While significant press transactions have usually happened either post-election or during a quiet political period, the buyout of Ringier Hungary comes under six months prior to April's parliamentary election.

Blikk was considered a key objective for Orbán and his political organization at a period when polls are signalling that they have a genuine competitor for the initial occasion in exceeding a decade.

Opposition Reaction

The opposition leader, Péter Magyar, whose Respect and Freedom political group is running on promises to eradicate deep-seated corruption, has been vocal about Orbán's "information apparatus" and the negative impact he asserts it has affected Hungary's political freedom.

He has condemned the Ringier Hungary deal, declaring it constitutes another attempt by Orbán to cement his control over Hungary's news publications.

Newspaper's Significance

While Blikk is a tabloid, renowned for its celebrity news and over-the-top headlines, in the recent years it has also published numerous articles on alleged corruption.

"Blikk is by far the most popular daily publication in Hungary, a industry frontrunner," stated a press expert. "The web version has become remarkably well-received in the past few years, becoming the fourth most popular digital platform in Hungary. If partisan content features in such extensively consumed and influential publications, it will have an effect on the public."

Global Perspective

For over a decade now, Hungary has functioned as a blueprint for other "semi-democratic systems" around the world.

Previous US leaders and their associates have frequently applauded Orbán's Hungary even as it falls in press freedom rankings.

In 2022, Orbán spoke to a meeting of US conservatives that the route to leadership necessitated "controlling media outlets."

Past Media Regulation

In 2010, Orbán's government approved a regulation that imposed state authority over the primary press oversight body and placed the state broadcaster in the management of loyalists.

Ownership Details

Indamedia is partially controlled by Mikló Vaszily, a government-supporting entrepreneur who is also CEO of a state-aligned TV network.

In a statement, Indamedia's other co-owner and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, stated: "Via the purchase of Ringier Hungary, the company is gaining a successful press organization of comparable scale to Indamedia, with solid commercial standing and popular products that play a defining role in the Hungarian media landscape."

Ringier said in a release that its determination to transfer was "based solely on commercial planning elements and our emphasis on our primary online operations in Hungary."

A government spokesperson was approached for comment.
