JP Morgan Mandates Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Corporate HQ Entry

The financial institution has notified employees working at its state-of-the-art main office in New York that they have to provide their biological identifiers to access the high-value skyscraper.

Move from Discretionary to Compulsory

The banking corporation had previously intended for the registration of biometric data at its Manhattan tower to be voluntary.

Nevertheless, employees of the US's largest bank who have started operations at the corporate hub since August have received electronic messages stating that biometric entry was now "required".

How Biometric Access Works

Biometric access requires staff to submit their hand geometry to enter security gates in the lobby instead of scanning their identification cards.

Office Complex Information

The main office building, which reportedly cost $3bn to build, will ultimately act as a workplace for thousands of workers once it is entirely staffed later this year.

Security Rationale

JP Morgan did not provide a statement but it is assumed that the employment of physical identifiers for access is intended to make the building better protected.

Exemption Provisions

There are exemptions for some employees who will retain the ability to use a badge for entry, although the criteria for who will utilize more standard badge entry remains unclear.

Additional Technological Features

In addition to the deployment of physical identifier systems, the company has also launched the "JPMC Work" mobile app, which acts as a digital badge and hub for worker amenities.

The platform permits employees to manage external entry, use interior guides of the building and arrange in advance meals from the building's 19 food service providers.

Broader Safety Concerns

The introduction of tighter entry controls comes as American companies, notably those with significant operations in the city, look to enhance safety following the incident of the CEO of one of the US's largest health insurers in recent months.

The CEO, the head of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan's offices.

Additional Office Considerations

It is not known if the financial firm intends to deploy the biometric system for staff at its locations in other major financial centres, such as the UK capital.

Corporate Surveillance Context

The move comes within debate over the implementation of digital tools to track workers by their organizations, including tracking workplace presence.

In recent months, all JP Morgan workers on hybrid work schedules were told they must return to the office on a daily basis.

Management Commentary

The organization's head, Jamie Dimon, has characterized JP Morgan's state-of-the-art skyscraper as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the organization.

Dimon, one of the global financial leaders, this week warned that the chance of the financial markets experiencing a decline was far greater than many investors thought.
